About the 3DS file format
3D Studio
The .3ds format dates back to the DOS-era Autodesk 3D Studio. Despite hard limits (65,536 vertices per mesh, 8.3 filenames for textures), it became one of the most redistributed model formats of the 1990s and 2000s.
Countless stock-model archives still ship .3ds files, so being able to open them in a browser saves installing legacy software.
