Browser-local workflow

How this tool works

  1. Step 1

    USDZ

Choose a USDZ file from this device.

  2. Step 2

    Browser-local conversion

The supported geometry is converted in this browser.

  3. Step 3

    GLB

Download the GLB result when conversion is complete.

Preserved

  • Geometry

Limited

  • Materials
  • Textures
  • Scene hierarchy

Lost

  • Vertex colors
  • Animation

Direct answer

What is preserved when converting USDZ to GLB?

This converter processes the USDZ file locally in your browser and downloads the converted GLB file. Geometry is retained by the current loader and writer. Materials, textures, scene hierarchy, and units and scale use a supported subset. Vertex colors and animation are not included in the downloaded file.

USDZ to GLB compatibility

These results describe Modelfy's current browser loader and exporter, not every feature allowed by the file specifications.

Data preserved, limited, or lost when converting USDZ to GLB
DataResultWhat this implementation does
GeometryPreservedGeometry is retained by the current USDZ loader and GLB writer.
MaterialsLimitedMaterials are normalized to Three.js standard materials; advanced shader properties can change.
TexturesLimitedLoaded image maps are embedded where the browser exporter supports them.
Vertex colorsNot exportedThe USDZ format can contain this data, but the current single-file loader does not retain it for conversion.
AnimationNot exportedThe USDZ format can contain this data, but the current single-file loader does not retain it for conversion.
Scene hierarchyLimitedScene hierarchy is carried through the supported subset of the USDZ loader and GLB writer.
Units and scaleLimitedASCII USDA-based archives preserve metersPerUnit; archives without stage metadata use the OpenUSD centimeter fallback.

Verify after export

  • Compare material colors and textures with the browser preview before using the result in production.
  • Confirm that a static model is acceptable; animation is not exported.

Why choose this USDZ to GLB converter

Local USDZ decoding

The selected USDZ model file is decoded and rewritten as GLB on your device; the model file is not uploaded to Modelfy.

USDZ to GLB data report

The compatibility table identifies geometry as preserved by this loader and writer.

GLB output checks

Materials is limited; review the implementation detail and verify the downloaded file in your destination tool.

Preview before export

Inspect the browser preview before converting, then use the post-export checklist to confirm the GLB result.

How to convert USDZ to GLB online

  1. 01

    Upload your USDZ file

Drag and drop the file into the converter, or click Upload. USDZ inputs up to 25 MB are processed locally.

  2. 02

    Convert to GLB

Preview the model in 3D, then click Convert. The conversion runs locally in the browser; processing time depends on model complexity and device resources.

  3. 03

    Download the GLB file

Your GLB file downloads straight to your device, ready for the next tool in your pipeline.

About the USDZ file format

Universal Scene Description (zipped)

USDZ packages Pixar’s Universal Scene Description into a single uncompressed ZIP archive. Apple adopted it as the native AR format for iOS: Safari, Messages, and Mail open USDZ files directly in AR Quick Look.

For e-commerce and product visualization, shipping a USDZ next to a GLB covers both Android (Scene Viewer) and iOS (Quick Look) AR experiences.

Strengths

  • Native AR support on iPhone and iPad
  • Single-file scene with materials
  • Backed by Pixar’s USD ecosystem

Commonly used for

  • iOS AR Quick Look experiences
  • E-commerce product AR
  • USD pipeline delivery

About the GLB file format

GL Transmission Format Binary

GLB is the binary container for glTF 2.0, the "JPEG of 3D" standard maintained by the Khronos Group. A single .glb file bundles meshes, PBR materials, textures, and animations, which makes it the easiest 3D format to move between tools and platforms.

Because GLB is optimized for fast loading on the web, it is the default output of most modern 3D pipelines, including AI 3D generators, web viewers, and game engines.

Format reference: Khronos glTF 2.0 specification

Strengths

  • Single self-contained file with textures included
  • Full PBR material and animation support
  • Loads fast in browsers and game engines

Commonly used for

  • Web and AR/VR experiences
  • Game engine asset delivery
  • AI-generated 3D model exchange

Frequently asked questions

Is my USDZ model file uploaded to a server?

The selected USDZ model file is processed by the browser and is not uploaded to Modelfy. Website code and static assets still load over the network like a normal web page.

Will I lose quality converting USDZ to GLB?

Mesh geometry is preserved as closely as the GLB format allows. The target format may triangulate geometry or drop unsupported features such as animations, materials, textures, or scene hierarchy.

Is the USDZ to GLB converter free to use?

Yes. The browser viewer, converter, and local 3D text tool require no account and add no watermark. Input limits vary by format, up to 50 MB; AI model generation is a separate credit-based product.

What is the maximum file size?

USDZ inputs up to 25 MB are accepted. The format-specific limit keeps browser-local parsing bounded; actual processing also depends on available memory, model complexity, and device performance.

Why can’t some USDZ files be opened in the browser?

USDZ archives can contain ASCII (.usda) or binary crate (.usdc) data. Browsers can parse the ASCII variant, but binary USDC (which many Apple tools export) has no JavaScript parser yet. If your file fails, convert from the original GLB instead.

What is the difference between GLB and glTF?

They share the same data model. A .gltf file is JSON that can reference external texture and buffer files, while a .glb packs everything into one binary file. GLB is easier to share; glTF is easier to inspect and edit by hand.
