Browser-local workflow

How this tool works

  1. Step 1

    USDZ

Choose a USDZ file from this device.

  2. Step 2

    Browser-local conversion

The supported geometry is converted in this browser.

  3. Step 3

    PLY

Download the PLY result when conversion is complete.

Preserved

  • Geometry

Lost

  • Materials
  • Textures
  • Vertex colors

Direct answer

What is preserved when converting USDZ to PLY?

This converter processes the USDZ file locally in your browser and downloads the converted PLY file. Geometry is retained by the current loader and writer. Materials, textures, vertex colors, animation, scene hierarchy, and units and scale are not included in the downloaded file.

These results describe Modelfy's current browser loader and exporter, not every feature allowed by the file specifications.

Data preserved, limited, or lost when converting USDZ to PLY
DataResultWhat this implementation does
GeometryPreservedGeometry is retained by the current USDZ loader and PLY writer.
MaterialsNot exportedPLY output from this tool does not store materials.
TexturesNot exportedPLY output from this tool does not store textures.
Vertex colorsNot exportedThe USDZ format can contain this data, but the current single-file loader does not retain it for conversion.
AnimationNot exportedThe USDZ format can contain this data, but the current single-file loader does not retain it for conversion.
Scene hierarchyNot exportedObjects are flattened into world-space vertex data in one binary PLY.
Units and scaleNot exportedPLY output from this tool does not store units and scale.

Verify after export

  • Confirm scale and units when opening the PLY file in the destination application.
  • Compare material colors and textures with the browser preview before using the result in production.
  • Confirm that a static model is acceptable; animation is not exported.

Why choose this USDZ to PLY converter

Local USDZ decoding

The selected USDZ model file is decoded and rewritten as PLY on your device; the model file is not uploaded to Modelfy.

USDZ to PLY data report

The compatibility table identifies geometry as preserved by this loader and writer.

PLY output checks

Materials is lost; review the implementation detail and verify the downloaded file in your destination tool.

Preview before export

Inspect the browser preview before converting, then use the post-export checklist to confirm the PLY result.

How to convert USDZ to PLY online

  1. 01

    Upload your USDZ file

Drag and drop the file into the converter, or click Upload. USDZ inputs up to 25 MB are processed locally.

  2. 02

    Convert to PLY

Preview the model in 3D, then click Convert. The conversion runs locally in the browser; processing time depends on model complexity and device resources.

  3. 03

    Download the PLY file

Your PLY file downloads straight to your device, ready for the next tool in your pipeline.

About the USDZ file format

Universal Scene Description (zipped)

USDZ packages Pixar’s Universal Scene Description into a single uncompressed ZIP archive. Apple adopted it as the native AR format for iOS: Safari, Messages, and Mail open USDZ files directly in AR Quick Look.

For e-commerce and product visualization, shipping a USDZ next to a GLB covers both Android (Scene Viewer) and iOS (Quick Look) AR experiences.

Strengths

  • Native AR support on iPhone and iPad
  • Single-file scene with materials
  • Backed by Pixar’s USD ecosystem

Commonly used for

  • iOS AR Quick Look experiences
  • E-commerce product AR
  • USD pipeline delivery

About the PLY file format

Polygon File Format

The Polygon File Format (also called the Stanford Triangle Format) was designed to store scanned 3D data. It supports per-vertex properties such as color and normals, in both ASCII and binary encodings.

PLY is common in photogrammetry, LiDAR, and research pipelines, where vertex colors captured by scanners need to survive the export.

Format reference: Stanford 3D scanning repository

Strengths

  • Per-vertex color support
  • Handles meshes and point clouds
  • Compact binary encoding

Commonly used for

  • 3D scanning and photogrammetry
  • Point cloud storage
  • Research and geometry processing

Frequently asked questions

Is my USDZ model file uploaded to a server?

The selected USDZ model file is processed by the browser and is not uploaded to Modelfy. Website code and static assets still load over the network like a normal web page.

Will I lose quality converting USDZ to PLY?

Mesh geometry is preserved as closely as the PLY format allows. The target format may triangulate geometry or drop unsupported features such as animations, materials, textures, or scene hierarchy.

Is the USDZ to PLY converter free to use?

Yes. The browser viewer, converter, and local 3D text tool require no account and add no watermark. Input limits vary by format, up to 50 MB; AI model generation is a separate credit-based product.

What is the maximum file size?

USDZ inputs up to 25 MB are accepted. The format-specific limit keeps browser-local parsing bounded; actual processing also depends on available memory, model complexity, and device performance.

Why can’t some USDZ files be opened in the browser?

USDZ archives can contain ASCII (.usda) or binary crate (.usdc) data. Browsers can parse the ASCII variant, but binary USDC (which many Apple tools export) has no JavaScript parser yet. If your file fails, convert from the original GLB instead.

Does the tool keep the vertex colors of my PLY file?

Yes. If your PLY contains per-vertex colors, the viewer displays them, and conversions to formats that support vertex colors (like PLY and GLB) preserve them.
