Browser-local workflow

How this tool works

  1. Step 1

    GLTF

Choose a GLTF file from this device.

  2. Step 2

    Browser-local conversion

The supported geometry is converted in this browser.

  3. Step 3

    USDZ

Download the USDZ result when conversion is complete.

Preserved

  • Geometry
  • Units and scale

Limited

  • Materials
  • Textures
  • Scene hierarchy

Lost

  • Vertex colors
  • Animation

Direct answer

What is preserved when converting GLTF to USDZ?

This converter processes the GLTF file locally in your browser and downloads the converted USDZ file. Geometry is retained by the current loader and writer. Materials, textures, and scene hierarchy use a supported subset. Vertex colors and animation are not included in the downloaded file.

GLTF to USDZ compatibility

These results describe Modelfy's current browser loader and exporter, not every feature allowed by the file specifications.

Data preserved, limited, or lost when converting GLTF to USDZ
DataResultWhat this implementation does
GeometryPreservedGeometry is retained by the current glTF loader and USDZ writer.
MaterialsLimitedMaterials are converted to the subset supported by Three.js USDZExporter.
TexturesLimitedOnly textures and buffers embedded in the single uploaded file are available; external files are blocked.
Vertex colorsNot exportedUSDZ output from this tool does not store vertex colors.
AnimationNot exportedThe glTF format can contain this data, but the current single-file loader does not retain it for conversion.
Scene hierarchyLimitedVisible meshes are written as world-space transforms rather than the complete source scene graph.
Units and scalePreservedThe USD stage declares metersPerUnit = 1.

Verify after export

  • Compare material colors and textures with the browser preview before using the result in production.
  • Confirm that a static model is acceptable; animation is not exported.
  • Preview the USDZ in Apple Quick Look to confirm scale and material appearance.

Why choose this GLTF to USDZ converter

Local GLTF decoding

The selected GLTF model file is decoded and rewritten as USDZ on your device; the model file is not uploaded to Modelfy.

GLTF to USDZ data report

The compatibility table identifies geometry, units and scale as preserved by this loader and writer.

USDZ output checks

Materials is limited; review the implementation detail and verify the downloaded file in your destination tool.

Preview before export

Inspect the browser preview before converting, then use the post-export checklist to confirm the USDZ result.

How to convert GLTF to USDZ online

  1. 01

    Upload your GLTF file

Drag and drop the file into the converter, or click Upload. GLTF inputs up to 10 MB are processed locally.

  2. 02

    Convert to USDZ

Preview the model in 3D, then click Convert. The conversion runs locally in the browser; processing time depends on model complexity and device resources.

  3. 03

    Download the USDZ file

Your USDZ file downloads straight to your device, ready for the next tool in your pipeline.

About the GLTF file format

GL Transmission Format

glTF 2.0 is a royalty-free specification from the Khronos Group for efficient transmission of 3D scenes. The .gltf variant stores the scene description as readable JSON, optionally referencing external binary buffers and textures.

It is the most widely supported runtime format on the web: three.js, Babylon.js, Unity, Unreal, and most DCC tools read and write glTF directly.

Format reference: Khronos glTF 2.0 specification

Strengths

  • Open standard with wide industry support
  • Human-readable JSON scene description
  • PBR materials, skins, and animations

Commonly used for

  • Web 3D and e-commerce viewers
  • Cross-tool scene exchange
  • Runtime asset delivery

About the USDZ file format

Universal Scene Description (zipped)

USDZ packages Pixar’s Universal Scene Description into a single uncompressed ZIP archive. Apple adopted it as the native AR format for iOS: Safari, Messages, and Mail open USDZ files directly in AR Quick Look.

For e-commerce and product visualization, shipping a USDZ next to a GLB covers both Android (Scene Viewer) and iOS (Quick Look) AR experiences.

Format reference: Alliance for OpenUSD USDZ specification

Strengths

  • Native AR support on iPhone and iPad
  • Single-file scene with materials
  • Backed by Pixar’s USD ecosystem

Commonly used for

  • iOS AR Quick Look experiences
  • E-commerce product AR
  • USD pipeline delivery

Frequently asked questions

Is my GLTF model file uploaded to a server?

The selected GLTF model file is processed by the browser and is not uploaded to Modelfy. Website code and static assets still load over the network like a normal web page.

Will I lose quality converting GLTF to USDZ?

Mesh geometry is preserved as closely as the USDZ format allows. The target format may triangulate geometry or drop unsupported features such as animations, materials, textures, or scene hierarchy.

Is the GLTF to USDZ converter free to use?

Yes. The browser viewer, converter, and local 3D text tool require no account and add no watermark. Input limits vary by format, up to 50 MB; AI model generation is a separate credit-based product.

What is the maximum file size?

GLTF inputs up to 10 MB are accepted. The format-specific limit keeps browser-local parsing bounded; actual processing also depends on available memory, model complexity, and device performance.

Does the browser tool support .gltf files with external buffers?

Self-contained .gltf files (embedded buffers and textures) work best, because the browser only receives the single file you upload. If your .gltf references external .bin or texture files, export it as .glb first.

Why can’t some USDZ files be opened in the browser?

USDZ archives can contain ASCII (.usda) or binary crate (.usdc) data. Browsers can parse the ASCII variant, but binary USDC (which many Apple tools export) has no JavaScript parser yet. If your file fails, convert from the original GLB instead.
