Browser-local workflow

How this tool works

  1. Step 1

    FBX

Choose a FBX file from this device.

  2. Step 2

    Browser-local conversion

The supported geometry is converted in this browser.

  3. Step 3

    USDZ

Download the USDZ result when conversion is complete.

Preserved

  • Geometry

Limited

  • Materials
  • Textures
  • Scene hierarchy

Lost

  • Vertex colors
  • Animation
  • Units and scale

Direct answer

What is preserved when converting FBX to USDZ?

This converter processes the FBX file locally in your browser and downloads the converted USDZ file. Geometry is retained by the current loader and writer. Materials, textures, and scene hierarchy use a supported subset. Vertex colors, animation, and units and scale are not included in the downloaded file.

These results describe Modelfy's current browser loader and exporter, not every feature allowed by the file specifications.

Data preserved, limited, or lost when converting FBX to USDZ
DataResultWhat this implementation does
GeometryPreservedGeometry is retained by the current FBX loader and USDZ writer.
MaterialsLimitedMaterials are converted to the subset supported by Three.js USDZExporter.
TexturesLimitedExported texture images are capped at 2048 pixels.
Vertex colorsNot exportedUSDZ output from this tool does not store vertex colors.
AnimationNot exportedUSDZ output from this tool does not store animation.
Scene hierarchyLimitedVisible meshes are written as world-space transforms rather than the complete source scene graph.
Units and scaleNot exportedThe FBX format can contain this data, but the current single-file loader does not retain it for conversion.

Verify after export

  • Confirm scale and units when opening the USDZ file in the destination application.
  • Compare material colors and textures with the browser preview before using the result in production.
  • Confirm that a static model is acceptable; animation is not exported.
  • Preview the USDZ in Apple Quick Look to confirm scale and material appearance.

Why choose this FBX to USDZ converter

Local FBX decoding

The selected FBX model file is decoded and rewritten as USDZ on your device; the model file is not uploaded to Modelfy.

FBX to USDZ data report

The compatibility table identifies geometry as preserved by this loader and writer.

USDZ output checks

Materials is limited; review the implementation detail and verify the downloaded file in your destination tool.

Preview before export

Inspect the browser preview before converting, then use the post-export checklist to confirm the USDZ result.

How to convert FBX to USDZ online

  1. 01

    Upload your FBX file

Drag and drop the file into the converter, or click Upload. FBX inputs up to 25 MB are processed locally.

  2. 02

    Convert to USDZ

Preview the model in 3D, then click Convert. The conversion runs locally in the browser; processing time depends on model complexity and device resources.

  3. 03

    Download the USDZ file

Your USDZ file downloads straight to your device, ready for the next tool in your pipeline.

About the FBX file format

Autodesk Filmbox

FBX carries complete scenes: meshes, materials, embedded textures, skeletons, and keyframe animation. It is the lingua franca between DCC tools like Maya, 3ds Max, and Blender and game engines like Unity and Unreal.

FBX is a proprietary format with binary and ASCII variants. Modern binary FBX (version 7.x, 2011 and newer) is what browsers can parse.

Strengths

  • Full scene, rig, and animation support
  • Standard in game development pipelines
  • Embedded textures and materials

Commonly used for

  • Game engine asset import
  • Character animation exchange
  • DCC tool interoperability

About the USDZ file format

Universal Scene Description (zipped)

USDZ packages Pixar’s Universal Scene Description into a single uncompressed ZIP archive. Apple adopted it as the native AR format for iOS: Safari, Messages, and Mail open USDZ files directly in AR Quick Look.

For e-commerce and product visualization, shipping a USDZ next to a GLB covers both Android (Scene Viewer) and iOS (Quick Look) AR experiences.

Strengths

  • Native AR support on iPhone and iPad
  • Single-file scene with materials
  • Backed by Pixar’s USD ecosystem

Commonly used for

  • iOS AR Quick Look experiences
  • E-commerce product AR
  • USD pipeline delivery

Frequently asked questions

Is my FBX model file uploaded to a server?

The selected FBX model file is processed by the browser and is not uploaded to Modelfy. Website code and static assets still load over the network like a normal web page.

Will I lose quality converting FBX to USDZ?

Mesh geometry is preserved as closely as the USDZ format allows. The target format may triangulate geometry or drop unsupported features such as animations, materials, textures, or scene hierarchy.

Is the FBX to USDZ converter free to use?

Yes. The browser viewer, converter, and local 3D text tool require no account and add no watermark. Input limits vary by format, up to 50 MB; AI model generation is a separate credit-based product.

What is the maximum file size?

FBX inputs up to 25 MB are accepted. The format-specific limit keeps browser-local parsing bounded; actual processing also depends on available memory, model complexity, and device performance.

Why does my FBX file fail to load?

Browser parsing supports binary FBX 7.0 and newer (roughly 2011+). Very old FBX 6.x files and some ASCII exports are not supported — re-export the model from your 3D tool with a current FBX version.

Why can’t some USDZ files be opened in the browser?

USDZ archives can contain ASCII (.usda) or binary crate (.usdc) data. Browsers can parse the ASCII variant, but binary USDC (which many Apple tools export) has no JavaScript parser yet. If your file fails, convert from the original GLB instead.
