Browser-local workflow

How this tool works

  1. Step 1

    PLY

Choose a PLY file from this device.

  2. Step 2

    Browser-local conversion

The supported geometry is converted in this browser.

  3. Step 3

    GLTF

Download the GLTF result when conversion is complete.

Preserved

  • Geometry
  • Vertex colors

Direct answer

What is preserved when converting PLY to GLTF?

This converter processes the PLY file locally in your browser and downloads the converted GLTF file. Geometry and vertex colors are retained by the current loader and writer.

PLY to GLTF compatibility

These results describe Modelfy's current browser loader and exporter, not every feature allowed by the file specifications.

Data preserved, limited, or lost when converting PLY to GLTF
DataResultWhat this implementation does
GeometryPreservedGeometry is retained by the current PLY loader and glTF writer.
MaterialsNot in sourcePLY does not define materials to carry into glTF.
TexturesNot in sourcePLY does not define textures to carry into glTF.
Vertex colorsPreservedVertex colors is retained by the current PLY loader and glTF writer.
AnimationNot in sourcePLY does not define animation to carry into glTF.
Scene hierarchyNot in sourcePLY does not define scene hierarchy to carry into glTF.
Units and scaleNot in sourcePLY does not define units and scale to carry into glTF.

Verify after export

  • Confirm scale and units when opening the glTF file in the destination application.

Why choose this PLY to GLTF converter

Local PLY decoding

The selected PLY model file is decoded and rewritten as GLTF on your device; the model file is not uploaded to Modelfy.

PLY to GLTF data report

The compatibility table identifies geometry, vertex colors as preserved by this loader and writer.

GLTF output checks

Review the generated GLTF file in your destination tool before using it in a production workflow.

Preview before export

Inspect the browser preview before converting, then use the post-export checklist to confirm the GLTF result.

How to convert PLY to GLTF online

  1. 01

    Upload your PLY file

Drag and drop the file into the converter, or click Upload. PLY inputs up to 25 MB are processed locally.

  2. 02

    Convert to GLTF

Preview the model in 3D, then click Convert. The conversion runs locally in the browser; processing time depends on model complexity and device resources.

  3. 03

    Download the GLTF file

Your GLTF file downloads straight to your device, ready for the next tool in your pipeline.

About the PLY file format

Polygon File Format

The Polygon File Format (also called the Stanford Triangle Format) was designed to store scanned 3D data. It supports per-vertex properties such as color and normals, in both ASCII and binary encodings.

PLY is common in photogrammetry, LiDAR, and research pipelines, where vertex colors captured by scanners need to survive the export.

Strengths

  • Per-vertex color support
  • Handles meshes and point clouds
  • Compact binary encoding

Commonly used for

  • 3D scanning and photogrammetry
  • Point cloud storage
  • Research and geometry processing

About the GLTF file format

GL Transmission Format

glTF 2.0 is a royalty-free specification from the Khronos Group for efficient transmission of 3D scenes. The .gltf variant stores the scene description as readable JSON, optionally referencing external binary buffers and textures.

It is the most widely supported runtime format on the web: three.js, Babylon.js, Unity, Unreal, and most DCC tools read and write glTF directly.

Strengths

  • Open standard with wide industry support
  • Human-readable JSON scene description
  • PBR materials, skins, and animations

Commonly used for

  • Web 3D and e-commerce viewers
  • Cross-tool scene exchange
  • Runtime asset delivery

Frequently asked questions

Is my PLY model file uploaded to a server?

The selected PLY model file is processed by the browser and is not uploaded to Modelfy. Website code and static assets still load over the network like a normal web page.

Will I lose quality converting PLY to GLTF?

Mesh geometry is preserved as closely as the GLTF format allows. The target format may triangulate geometry or drop unsupported features such as animations, materials, textures, or scene hierarchy.

Is the PLY to GLTF converter free to use?

Yes. The browser viewer, converter, and local 3D text tool require no account and add no watermark. Input limits vary by format, up to 50 MB; AI model generation is a separate credit-based product.

What is the maximum file size?

PLY inputs up to 25 MB are accepted. The format-specific limit keeps browser-local parsing bounded; actual processing also depends on available memory, model complexity, and device performance.

Does the tool keep the vertex colors of my PLY file?

Yes. If your PLY contains per-vertex colors, the viewer displays them, and conversions to formats that support vertex colors (like PLY and GLB) preserve them.

Does the browser tool support .gltf files with external buffers?

Self-contained .gltf files (embedded buffers and textures) work best, because the browser only receives the single file you upload. If your .gltf references external .bin or texture files, export it as .glb first.
